Let the children choose the exercises

Children sit still more than they used to. In our house, training has become something we do together, and the children decide half the session. Adresseavisen wrote about it in Løpeklubben.

Adresseavisen joined us for training for the series Løpeklubben. You can find the full article, with video, at Adresseavisen. Here are some of my thoughts on training with the children.

I train a lot, and I have three children. If both are going to fit into an ordinary week, the training sometimes has to happen where the children are. So I bring them along. Not as an audience on the sidelines, but as participants. The session turns out different from when I run alone, but that is also the point: I get my training in, and we get time together.

The most important thing I have learnt is that the children have to get to decide a bit themselves. Today they got to choose two exercises each. Then it becomes their session too, and not something mum drags them along to. We remind each other of the good outings we have had, and every now and then we end up with an ice cream.

And it doesn't have to look like training. Post hunts, treasure trails and Pokémon Go get the kids outside and moving. In the summer holidays I made a summer challenge with points for being physically active, discovering nature, being creative and doing something nice together. They were really motivated by it. The main thing is to get outside and be active.
